The Congo Republic

The Congo River separates the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from the Republic of the Congo (RC). Dr. Steve Van Horn made his first trip to the DRC in 1999. But did not visit RC until many years later.

The first ITEM seminars were conducted in RC by ITEM’s coordinators in the DRC, Pastors Joel Mananga and Benoit Mazunda in 2010. Dr. Van Horn conducted his first seminar there in 2011.

In this picture are Pastor Benoit Mazunda (R), ITEM Coordinator for the DRC, Pastor Lewere Idas Mesminu, ITEM’s Coordinator for the Republic of the Congo, and Pastor Joel Mananga (L), assistant to Benoit Mazunda. These men know each other because all three have been on the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ in their own countries. Hear Lewere’s vision for training pastors in The Republic of Congo. This is a mixed group. ITEM firmly believes the Bible is clear that it is not any woman’s role to serve as the pastor of a church (1 Tim 2:12, 3:2). But there are still women who call themselves “Pastor” who show up at ITEM seminars. We are always kind and gracious but in the course of the week we study passages in the Bible that make it very clear.
This is the first seminar group from the Republic of the Congo that Steve has had the privilege of training.
